"If all our national holidays were observed on Wednesdays, we could wind up with nine-day weekends." - George Carlin

Party on,

News

Welcome to June!  Summer is imminent and vacations come to mind.  Father's Day is June 17th.  Don't forget about Dad!  Put out "Ol Glory" on June 14th for Flag Day.  Eat lots of watermelon and barbecued burgers.  Don't forget to drink plenty of water, too.

I love summer.  Biking, swimming, riding around with the top down... it just seems so natural to me.  I'm sure it seems natural to many others, too.

Which reminds me:  are you in the "summer" business category?  If so, please allow me to voice your next advertising campaign or web presentation.  You may hear my demos directly from my front page:  Doc Phillips Productions

More News

Because marketing is in a constant state of flux, I subscribe to several newsletters on the subject.  More often than not, I am amazed at the good information I am able to glean from these newsletters.  One of the more recent articles I read opens up an entire new market for voiceover professionals.  An excerpt follows:

Web-videos are not feature films or even viral videos intended to show how clever you are. You are making a commercial: special effects may be cool but they are not a substitute for a finely crafted script delivered by a professional performer.

Six Questions That Produce Successful Web Advertising

And, oh yes... I brand web site presentations as well!

More Marketing News

Most people average more than 3,000 commercial message exposures a day, and the volume continues to grow. (Reality check: After you've bought your next $12 movie ticket, count the commercials and previews you have to sit through before the film begins). Creating clear, concise messages that are smoothly integrated is absolutely crucial to successful customer communications.

That's because, despite all the new technologies, this marketing principle hasn't changed: You must start with a relevant position, supported by consistent communications, to achieve a desired position with your target audience.

Fun & Games

The answer to last month's trivia question:  Although she'll be remembered for a single, but very memorable role on one of TV's most successful and long-running sit-coms, she has a long list of credits, including some animation voiceover work.  She appeared in two episodes of "King of the Hill" among others.  Her throaty, gravel voice serves her well.  Besides, it's very sexy.  Okay - here comes a clue:  If you think you have an answer, "I'm listening"!

Who is she?

ANSWER:  Peri Gilpin

Born in Waco, Texas, Peri Gilpin grew up in Dallas, where her family encouraged her acting abilities. After studying at the Dallas Theater Center, she pursued acting at the University of Texas at Austin and then at London's British-American Academy. She appeared in guest roles on such popular situation comedies as "Designing Women" (1986), "Cheers" (1982) and "Wings" (1990), where she worked with the late producer, Roz Doyle, the namesake of her character on "Frasier" (1993).

  • Worked as a makeup artist before getting her acting break after meeting Blythe Danner, who became her main supporter.
  • Named after the Disney cartoon character Peri the squirrel.
  • Weighed so much during gestation that her parents thought she was a boy.
  • Actually worked as a radio show sound engineer.
  • Her father, Jim O'Brien, was a well known and respected radio and TV News weatherman/personality in Philadelphia in the '70s and early 80s. He died in a skydiving accident on September 25, 1983.
  • Godmother to "Frasier" (1993) co-star Jane Leeves's daughter, Isabella Kathryn Coben.
  • Owns a production company, "Bristol Cities", with "Frasier" (1993) co-star Jane Leeves and Jane's sister, Kathryn.
  • Was the only one of the five main cast members for "Frasier" (1993) never to be nominated for an Emmy.

Trivia for April

This month's personality will be another fill-in the blank.  Okay... ready?  Many on-camera actors actually get their bread and butter from voiceover work.  This month's selection certainly stands out, although his name is seldom recognized.  He has provided voices for many animated Disney features as well as having a regular on-camera gig in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.  He even directed several episodes.  He now appears as a regular on the hit ABC-TV show, "Boston Legal".

Who is he?
