Breaking News!

Let's not make this a trend!

Just after I distributed last month's newsletter, still more sad news.  Broadcast legend Merv Griffin passed away following a second bout with prostate cancer.  No, I didn't know him, but I admired his work since his days filling in for Jack Paar on the old Tonight Show (remember the version following the original version hosted by Steve Allen?)  In fact, when Jack Paar decided to leave the Tonight Show, Merv was thought to be the shoo-in for the gig.  Instead, the show went to Johnny Carson.  Not bad company in which to be, huh?

Sidewalk Santas, Comb Your Beards!

Okay, it's September and fall is imminent.  Retailers are preparing for the holidays, checking inventories, managing stock and planning their advertising campaigns.  I'd sure like to be a part of it.  Please feel free to contact me for your next voiceover project.

Get Your Song On!

September also means that it's time for Season 5 of Tucson Idol, our local knockoff to the Fox TV hit.  We started Tucson Idol in 2004 and little did I know of the extraordinary local, amateur talent to be found right here in the Desert Southwest.  I'm really looking forward to this season.  In fact, 3 of our former Tucson Idol contestants went on to audition for American Idol with one of them making it through the first two rounds.  If you're in the area, please be my guest.  Our shows are held on Saturdays throughout the month of November.  They're all afternoon performances and they're all family friendly.

Technician's Corner

I'm quite proud of myself.  I built my first computer from a bare bones kit.  It's smokin' fast and it worked the first time I plugged it in.  Plus, it was WAY cheaper than buying from the Big Box outfits.  And I got to install the sofware I wanted - no more, no less.

I've also recently acquired a full-blown, audio/video, extra storage, FM tuner, recorder Media Player.  I specifically purchased it to view movies when travelling by air and to catch up on podcasts.  Have you heard the voiceover podcasts at voices-dot-com?  Very well-produced, brief and quite informative, too.  So much so, that I subscribed!  You can find them here:  podcasts

Marketing News for Voice Artists

Because marketing is in a constant state of flux, I subscribe to several newsletters on the subject.  More often than not, I am amazed at the good information I am able to glean from these newsletters.  One of the more recent articles I read opens up an entire new market for voiceover professionals.  An excerpt follows:

Web-videos are not feature films or even viral videos intended to show how clever you are. You are making a commercial: special effects may be cool but they are not a substitute for a finely crafted script delivered by a professional performer.

Six Questions That Produce Successful Web Advertising

And, oh yes... I brand web site presentations as well!

Other Marketing News

Most people average more than 3,000 commercial message exposures a day, and the volume continues to grow. (Reality check: After you've bought your next $12 movie ticket, count the commercials and previews you have to sit through before the film begins). Creating clear, concise messages that are smoothly integrated is absolutely crucial to successful customer communications.

That's because, despite all the new technologies, this marketing principle hasn't changed: You must start with a relevant position, supported by consistent communications, to achieve a desired position with your target audience.
